612 Volunteer Gliding Squadron (VGS), based at Dalton Barracks (formerly RAF Abingdon) is a unit under the operational Command and Control of 3 Flying Training School, 22 (Training) Group, Royal Air Force Air Command.
612 VGS is 1 of 25 VGS’s located at various sites around the UK. The role of the Squadron is to provide flying courses to the young people in the Air Cadet Organisation. The Squadron currently has 4 aircraft and primarily operates at the weekends, although it does provide a few weeklong residential courses throughout the year.
The Squadron is staffed purely by volunteers, trained and examined to RAF flying and instructional standards and staff give up their free time to provide the fantastic flying training opportunities available to the Air Cadets. In recognition for all the staffs efforts, the Squadron was awarded the prestigious ‘Queens Award for Voluntary Service’ in 2013.
